HISTORY

PAST

Wieśniacy - meaning village people - are from Birmingham and are one of the oldest Polish folklore groups in the UK. Next year they will be celebrating their 75th anniversary! Wieśniacy song and dance ensemble was founded in 1949 by Poles displaced from their homeland after the events of World War II. For seven decades now, the group has been a key element of the Polish community in Birmingham and through extensive performing, Brits have also become better acquainted with Polish culture and customs.

PRESENT DAY

Currently, Wieśniacy together with its younger group Szarotka (Edelweiss), consists of about 35 members aged 10 to 50+. The members form a mixture of those with Polish roots born in the UK, those who have emigrated here, and those who are not Polish by origin but are just as eager to change into a colourful costume, sing their hearts out and socialise Polish style. Wieśniacy are really keen on including as much authentic detail in our performances as possible and keeping a natural presence on stage. In these challenging times, we are also trying our best to preserve the richness of Polish folklore for the next generations of Brummies.
